Americas Award announcement

Good afternoon,

For those of you attending ALA in Washington, D.C., please plan to attend the presentation for The Americas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature, scheduled for Monday, June 29, 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Mumford Room (Room 649), James Madison Memorial Building at the Library of Congress.

The Americas Award for Children and Young Adult Literature is given in recognition of U.S. works (picture books, folklore, poetry, young adult novels, selected non-fiction) published in the previous year in English or Spanish that engagingly relate to Latin America, the Caribbean, or U.S. Latino cultures.

The 1997 Americas winners are _The Circuit_, by Francisco Jimenez
(University of New Mexico Press) and _The Face at the Window_, by Regina Hanson (Clarion) and illustrated by Linda Saport. Jimenez, Hanson and Saport will all be present to receive the recognition. Also speaking will be Mr. Iran Rodriguez, Chief of the Migrant Head Start Branch. A reception follows the award.
       Admission to the ceremony/reception, by invitation or by wearing your ALA badge, is free. This event is cosponsored by the LC Hispanic Division and the Center for the Book, with the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP). Additional financial support is provided by Clarion Books.
