I thought that one of Burgess's achievements was in portraying the very different lasting effects that the drug had on each character. Gemma was, to me, the least appealing character at the start of the book -- yet by the end, it's horrifyingly apparent that she's the only one who might lead a human life. As a reader, in order to close the book without a permanently sick heart, I had to invest all my hopes in her. Tar, I had to abandon completely. Not a pleasant thing to do.
