To All:
I did not want to read this book. Drug addicts, yech. I was whining to another librarian that this listserv was going to discuss it and that I actually _had_ to read it. She said put aside my preconceived notions, read it. So I did.
Just as the kids eat up _Go Ask Alice_, which reads incredibly dated these days, they will snap up Smack. The insidiousness of drug addiction is aptly described by all of the characters. The belief in self-will. _I'm strong enough_ . The pervasive denial, _Everyone else has a problem, not me_ The danger of relapse.
That drug addition is a family disease. Tar's father and mother caught in its grasp.
That's all I have time for. Looking forward to comments by others.
