I've read fewer than 100 pages (the book is difficult for me for personal reasons) but right now it strikes me that Richard is a somewhat twisted Tomorrow Billy(Hamilton, "Planet of Junior Brown.") Of course, in 20 more pages I may have different thoughts.
Some of the glossary seems "mistranslated". E.g., a "roundabout" on a children's playground is one of those roundish things with handles that some children ride on while others push it. As "translated" it's a clover leaf on a highway entry--quite different. There are others--nothing serious--but, e.g., how much is a "pound sterling" in 1997-8 $'s? A 'phone call from Bristol to otherwhere therefore costs ???? Not that it's important, but the details can make a difference if so many of the characters contribute "quid" so that Tar can call home
I'll soldier on. And, as one who has lived in an anarchistic nation
(Italy), I say: more power to them. Then again, I'm on ALA Council so know a little bit about autocracy meeting anarchy.
