Smack, Y.A. Books, & Positive Adult Characters

I keep reflecting on Karen's comment last week along with a couple of others about "positive adult characters" or lack of same in Smack.

Authors put a lot of energy into moving fictional adults off-stage, as it were, in books for children and young adults so the plot can develop, not to mention the characters.

Is the presence of adult characters - positive or otherwise - necessary to the success of Smack? of a young adult novel? And if so, then who defines "positive?" More examples, please, from Smack.. Sincerely, Ginny
