Since this is my first message, I'll introduce myself briefly. I'm a 1995 Information>Studies. Right now I'm a stay-at-home mom, and I'm glad to have a chance to be in touch with people who share my interest in children's literature. while. The banter between the two main characters, Margalo and Mikey (the
"bad" and "badder" of the title), is wonderfully clever. The humor is subtle but razor sharp. Interestingly, Margalo and Mikey often don't know when to take each other seriously ("It's a joke," one or the other of them says repeatedly throughout the book.) The reader doesn't know whether to laugh or cry either, as the subject (divorce) is quite serious. This book, however, is not one of those that occasionally incorporates humor into the story (as Sharon Creech does in Walk Two Moons, as others have pointed out). Humor, and its uses, is at the heart of this book.
