One doesn't expect to laugh while reading a holocaust memoir, but I have to highly recommend Ana Novac's The Beautiful Days of My Youth: My Six Months in Auschwitz and Plaszow (Holt 1997, translated from french). Her sharp observations and descriptions, along with a biting sense of humor made me laugh out loud as I was reading. Perhaps it was her sense of humor that helped her survive; certainly it will attract readers if emphasized in book talks.
