Chris, if you were a teacher at Longfellow School, where I am the library media specialist, and came to me with this question, I would probably suggest that the most expedient way to stay on top of new releases in any genre or subject area would be to borrow my HORN BOOK GUIDE each semester. It is a 6 month retrospective guide to all that has been published in children's literature in this country in the previous half year. It lags somewhat behind publication: the October issue covers the previous January to June; the April issue covers the preceding July to December. It is comprehensive and comparative (with a 1-6 rating scale) and is arranged in shelf-list order so that you could flip right to the 800's for poetry. As a librarian, I use it to fill in holes in my collection development but for your use, it might be an excellent first tool.

Ask your school library media specialist whether he/she subscribes!
