I second the recommendation of Wisniewski's "The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups." His other books seem on the more serious side so it is nice to see that he has a rather sly sense of humor. This book has much in common with Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith books. It is presented as a file of a secret agent, very witty. Also, full of rather gross humor, the sort referred to earlier on this list (e.g. the REAL reason why you shouldn't pick your nose.) My 4th graders loved it. I made it very secret, read them one rule a day and locked up up afterwards.

Speaking of Lane Smith, my students have always loved "The Happy Hocky Family," a send-up of early basal readers.

By the way, I'm new to this list. Obviously, I'm a fourth grade teacher, perhaps not so obviously, at the Dalton School in New York City. I've been active in many spheres of education and children's literature for some time. I'm an ancient (in cyberspace years) subscriber to Child_lit through which I learned of ccbc-net.
