Hi All,
It's been so nice to hear from all you people who appreciate poetry and try to incorporate it in your libraries. I started a poetry group for children ages 9 - 12 about six years ago called "Popcorn Poets." Yes, I lured them in with popcorn, but once they were there they loved it! We meet once a month and we do all sorts of activities that center around poetry. Right now I have 15 kids (nearly even number of boys and girls) that attend Popcorn Poets.
One of the most popular activities is our "Popcorn Poets Pick-of-the-Month." I read five poems from a variety of authors
(usually they are all centered around a theme) and the kids vote for their favorite one! It seems simple, but you should hear them cheering for their favorite! Then, I do a display with the winning poem and keep it up in the children's room for the month! They love it!
If you would like more information about the group, please feel free to contact me. I did have an article about Popcorn Poets in the September 1996 issue of School Library Journal if you have access to it. Good luck!
