Like many of you, I don't think middle grade humor gets its due.
Do any of you remember a book by John Reynolds Gardiner, TOP SECRET? I shared it with a great many fourth, fifth and sixth graders and they were convulsed with laughter -- but it never got enough attention to keep it alive; a real shame.
Eleanora E. Tate's remarks about THE WATSONS GO TO BIRMINGHAM... interested me in that I often think that a book dealing with a serious subject can be well-served by humorous incidents or moments; it's what allows readers to handle the main idea and make the human connection.
It occurs to me that the only way middle grade humor is going to get the attention it really deserves is for some agency/entity/state to establish an award for it.
