For a humorous YA/JUV book, I would second the person who recommended
"Harris and Me" by Paulsen. For picture books, I would have to say the Minerva Louise series by Stoeke. I love the simple line drawings that give Minerva such warmth and "lovableness." Her naive curious way of investigating her world is so endearing. Adults and children both seem to appreciate it.
