CAN FUNNY BOOKS WIN AWARDS?

Well, there was OFFICER BUCKLE, which won the Caldecott, and I remember thinking LILY's PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE would certainly get an honor, but it didn't. And ELLA ENCHANTED, if not funny, is light. But I agree, funny books don't seem to win as much, especially at the middle grade level.

And at least for me as a writer, humor is something I dearly wish I could do -and do well, but tend to be a dismal failure at. One of my son's favorite books this year was Pilkey's CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS, and not just for the underpants, but for its energy and fun.
