CAN FUNNY BOOKS WIN AWARDS?

Brenda: What do you mean by "funny book"? Do you have any specific, definitive ones in mind? There are a fair number of award winners with funny scenes, or thoughts, or language (Ella Enchanted, Catherine called Birdy, Maphead, Flour Babies, anything of Jerry Spinelli's and the last two Children's Choice toppers, Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger and Bunting's Nasty Stinky Sneakers for instance, among recent titles) in among the heavier themes and issues. Though it may be true that if one stirred ALL the past decade's big books together, the resulting dough wouldn't exactly float out of the bowl, I think you'd still see a fair rise.
