Humor in Young Adult Books

One of my favorite books from 1997 is a young YA novel, "Tangerine," by a new author: Edward Bloor. This book exhibits realistic humor in very serious situations in a way I think will appeal to many teenagers. "Slot Machine" by Chris Lynch, from a few years ago, does the same thing. Neither of these books are easy, chuckling stories. They are both intense and difficult, but very rewarding -- the young narrators (both 14 year old boys) display resiliency and budding maturity through their sense of humor. (Sideline: these are also both "sprs s books" that are much more than just sports books -- for the mature yet reluctant reader.)
