Humor in Young Adult Books

I have found my fourth graders enjoy the humor in the Fudge stories of Judy Blume and my fifth graders really found "Soup" a great book. I had the great pleasure of hearing Christopher Curtis read a chapter from "The Watsons go to Birmingham" at our media conference last fall. It was the chapter where the boy gets his mouth frozen to the car mirror. We laughed so hard! I came back and read that chapter to eighth graders who also thought it was hilarious and begged their teacher to finish the book. Even though it has a very serious theme, they all loved the book (including the teacher). I also enjoyed the "Motel of the Mysteries" and have shared it with high school students. It's a good way to introduce satire. This has been a great discussion to follow!
