I must disagree with the suggestion that children do not get the humor of "the secret knowledge of grownups". I have been reading bits and pieces of the book to grade 3 for the last few weeks. Everyone wants to borrow the book. They definitely understand the humor. I am not sure a younger child would get humor, third grade definitely does.
