I have been a little distracted from my e-list lately (disruptive library renovation project at my library), but has anyone mentioned Naomi Shihab Nye as a visting poet? She visited our community and library a few years ago. Not only is she a charming and interesting person, but she has a talent I have rarely noted in poets: she is a wonderful reader of her own and others' poetry.

Naomi visited local and remote Alaskan schools as an artist in the school. She inspired children to write remarkable poetry. In two readings, one at the library and one of the radio, she included her students poems. The poems were amazing and her readings were powerful.

We all know her strengths as a writer and a collector of poetry, but I encourage you all to seek opportunities to hear her as a reader as well.
