As we continue to think about the body of Russell Freedman's work, I know you will be interested in finding out that two other individuals have just been announced as recipients of a major international award for the body of their work.

Katherine Paterson is the winner of the 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Medal for writing, and Tomi Ungerer is the winner of this Andersen Medal for illustration. The awards will be presented during the IBBY
(International Board on Books for Young People Congress) in New Delhi, India, on September 20, 1998.

Our congratulations to both winners and their editors! Cheers, as well, to the members of the USBBY (United States Board on Books for Young People) committee who nominated Katherine Paterson!

We will schedule a CCBC-NET discussion related to this news and this award sometime this summer. Meanwhile, enjoy the news. Just think about the fact that Katherine Paterson's books have already been translated into 22 languages other than English and are already being read by many children across the world.

If you can't go to New Delhi, how about traveling to Washington, D.C., to hear Russell Freedman's acceptance speech for the Wilder Award? This is possible. If you or anyone you know wants to attend the Wilder Award presentation, refer that person to the April issue of the ALA journal American Libraries which has information about Newbery/Caldecott/Wilder Award banquet tickets and about the entire Annual Conference of the American Library Association in Washington, D.C. The banquet will be held on Sunday evening, June 28. It's possible to sit in on the speeches without buying a ticket to the banquet. But, it's essential to look at that issue of Am. Libraries as to whether or not one must be registered for the Annual Conference to go to the speeches without attending the banquet.

And now, what else have you observed or have children mentioned related to Russell Freedman's books? ... Ginny
