Kathleen: As an elementary/middle school library media specialist, I have sometimes found that children think these books are more "like stories," and that they need NONFICTION. It may be a function of the quantity of illustrations or just the fact that Freedman's style reads so easily it couldn't possibly be nonfiction. Sometimes kids get some strange ideas about what things are in spite of all our teaching.
