I read "Parrot in the Oven" about a year ago and was very disappointed. Our copy is checked out so I apologize for being vague. I remember thinking that the main character was unremarkable and fairly uninteresting. The poetic insights in his narration did not fit the character as we came to know him. I realize that in a first person narrative the words can be more sophisticated that those that the character might use himself (as in "Out of the Dust"), but I don't think the character and the narrative voice "matched" the way they should have. The episodes in his life also seemed pretty dull and predictable. I probably missed something, and I look forward to reading here about the qualities that earned the book two big awards...
