I can understand Mr. Aronson's concern about the sophistication of Novac's
"Beautiful Days", but must hasten to assure him- Novac's voice came through as a precocious, aware, somewhat obnoxious adolescent, and it was this tenacious, wiser-than-thou obstinacy that, while it might drive so?lled grown-ups crazy in a normal life situation, was one of the reasons Novac managed to survive. That, and her determination to create, to write, in the face of apparently insurmountable obstacles.
I appreciated the fact that the very qualities- a sense of rebellion, stubborness, pseudo-cynicism- that may make the teenage years a trial (for teenagers as well as their caring adults) in Novac's case kept her alive. I found her voice true to her character, and, in the end, remarkably life?firming.
