I completely agree wtih all of Karen's comments on Russell Freedman's work, and would add only that all of his books evidence respect for the child reader by never "dumb-ing down" or prettying up the real, often challenging lives of fascinating individuals. Having just lately seen his
*Martha Graham: A Dancer's Life*, my appreciation of his ability to adapt his format to suit a particular subject is even greater. The balance of visuals and text, the elegance of design and typeface, and the factual and emotional honesty of this book make it a tribute to a remarkable artist and a standard-pusher for children discovering what doors a book can open.
