Thanks to the individuals who commented on one or more works of Latino literature given formal acknowledgment by the Pura Belpre award process of the ALA/REFORMA-ALSC Pura Belpre Award. We appreciate the information shared about Ms. Pura Belpre, as well.

CCBC information services during April and May are listed in "The CCBC This Season" on the CCBC website (www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/), as are weekly book reviews, a link of the month, a publisher of the month and other lists + links furnishing a wide variety of children's literature information.

The CCBC-NET Discussion Schedule for the next three months is:

1) March 30-April 12: Books by Russell Freedman, 1998 winner of the ALA/ALSC Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for the body of his work. You are welcome to make comments about any of Russell Freedman's books, but if you're reading his works for the first time, we encourage you to begin with the following books: Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, The Wright Brothers, and Kids at Work. 2) April 13-April 30: April is National Poetry Month. The national high visiblity and popularity of poetry in adult life extends to what is being published and enjoyed by teenagers. Exiting new editions of poetry are being published for children, as we noticed while we discussed Coretta Scott King and Pura Belpre winners and honor books. A suggested discussion list will be posted soon, but in the meantime, think about favorite anthologies as well as books of original poetry published for children and young adults. 3) May: Humor! Here's a topic to test your mettle. Why? We all realize that what is funny to one person can leave another blank. There are countless silly books and books of humor published every year for children and a few for young teenagers - but not many. Some are successful, and others are not. Let's share titles and anecdotes about successful humorous books, first for young children (May 1) and then for older kids (May 161). Are there sure-fire authors of humor? This will be the time to talk about them, too. 4) June: Smack by Melvin Burgess (U.S. edition: Henry Holt, 1998) was published two years ago in England under it original title: Junk. This novel won the Guardian Award for Fiction and the Carnegie Medal for distinguished literature for young people. Try to locate and read this provocative young adult novel between now and June, so you can provide your own responses for our discussion.
