CCBCers: At the risk of being redundant, which Freedman is not, I'd like to mention the grace and clarity he demonstrates in his writing style. What I particularly appreciate is the care he takes with historical fact so that I didn't need to fact check before I put the books out for students to use. His choice of illustrations always fits the context instead of just being tossed in.
I wish we had more accurate, readable history.
Of the many writers of nf, the three I most appreciate are: Freedman, Meltzer (my own candidate for the Wilder), and usually Murphy. There may be others, but those three stand out as exemplars.
