March 16-March 30: Let's begin discussing some of the 1998 Pura Belpre Award winners for outstanding writing and illustration by Latino book creators (American Library Association:REFORMA&ALSC) published during 1996 & 1997. Have any of you used any of the following books with children? with teenagers? If yes, what are some of their responses?
Pura Belpre Author Award: Parrot in the Oven: mi vida by Victor Marinez
(Joanna Colter Books/HarperCollins) Author Honor Books: 1) Laughing Tomatoes and other Spring Poems = Jitomates Risuenos y otros poemas de primavera by Francisco X. Alarcon, illus. by Maya Christina Gonzalez (Children's Book Press); and 2) Spirits of the High Mesa by Floyd Martinez (Pinata Books) Illlustrator Award: Snapshots from the Wedding illus by Stephanie Garcia, written by Gary Soto (G.P. Putnam's Sons)
Pura Belpre Illustrator Honor Books: 1) In My Family = En Mi Familia illus and written by Carmen Lomaz Garza
(Children's Book Press); 2) The Golden Flower: A TAino Myth from Puerto Rico illus by Enrique O. Sanchez, written by Nina Jaffe (Simon & Schuster); and 3) Gathering the Sun: An Alphabet in Spanish and English illus by Simon Silva, written by Alma Flor Ada (Lothrop).
March 30-April 12: Books by Russell Freedman, winner of the 1998 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for his complete body of work. We'll discuss what we value and notice about Freedman's biographies and other works published since 1987, including Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Kids at Work, and The Wright Brothers.
April 13-April 30: April is National Poetry Month. We'll be looking at Poetry and sharing reliable sources of information about Poetry and responding to selected books of poetry (list will be announced).
