Books in translation

Marc, and all, I don't want to come across as wanting to lose completely the "foreigness" of a translated book. It is more that I don't want the translation to be so choppy and awkward that we lose the chance to capture a child with this other world. I can think of one or two recent examples of translated books that were so bumpy as to lose me. A publisher was willing to take a chance on a book and then the translation let it down. It is more that like any book, translated or not, the writing has to work for the reader. If you have to stop and start and work at reading it, it's not for our kids. A delicate balance, I agree, but when you have a team like Marc's, you win all the way around. Karen B.
