Interesting assessment of The Little Mermaid. If it is such a terrible story, why is it included in almost every Andersen compilation? The story may be strange and foreign to us, but I find it fascinating and moving, and I would hate to have it not be available to children. I'm sure it's better in Danish than it is in English; the professor at the Univ. of Wis. who teaches Andersen says that we non?nish speakers are missing a lot. Translation is the only way we can even get an inkling of what all the other people of the world are thinking and writing. Think of all the African languages!!! No one can know every language. I am very grateful that publishers are taking a chance on these books. My pathetic attempts to become fluent in French, German, Italian, and Spanish still leave out most of the languages of the world, so I NEED translations.
