If God is in the details, Russell Freedman must be next to holiness. He has a marvelous ability to accumulate and select wonderful, compelling details--the contents of Lincoln's pocket the night that he died, the way the people at Cape Hatteras reacted to the Wright Brothers' ever correct fashion statements, the many uses of the buffalo. I think it's by focusing on some selected small, fascinating details that he helps to both delineate the larger issues and give us the "you are there" feel. These are the things we would want to have noticed ourselves, had we had a ringside seat.
