Since I no longer am in active service in a library, I will be interested to know from those who are in a young people's room or a school library, how many youngsters pick up this quite marvelous book from a table or face-out shelf. And I will be interested to learn how long the kids pore over it. Why I pose this is because I have yet to see a youngster page through "The Golem" for more than a minute in my local p.l.
"Venturesome creativity"-- one of the Notable Children's Books criteria--as well as a phrase I would certainly like to see added to both Newby and Caldy: "likelihood of acceptance by children."
I certainly tried and tried and tried to have Drescher's delightfully interesting illustrations "win" a notable vote--but lost. Why? I think because he was too "venturesome" and was very different from the pastels many had come to expect.
Oh well, lose a few, lose a few more.
