In response to Carrie's question about booktalks on Out of the Dust. I've been reading sections of the book to my 5th through 8th graders and have a waiting list for the book. The fact that it is poetry doesn't turn them off to the story at all. I also ask the kids what they think the Dust Bowl was? Most frequent response: A football game so then we are able to discuss Am. history some.
