Thanks for your clarification. I understand that choosing the Newbury winner is no simple task.
Just to respond once more though to the point about parents reading and selecting books for their children: as a children's librarian for a number of years and as a children's author now, I feel quite confident in saying that, in fact, very few parents actually read the books their children are reading once they're past the early grades. I'm sure most, if not all, the people on this list DO read the books they give their children, but we aren't a very representative group, are we? Even people who know me quite well who tell me how much their children like my books make it clear they haven't bothered to read them themselves, so I doubt that people who don't know me take the time.
