Notes

Susan and all,

I totally agree with the importance of notes. In my most recent book, "Don't Split the Pole," I tried to have author's notes at the end regarding some of the sayings that I used for the basis of the stories in the book, but unfortunately the author's notes, and then the footnotes, were removed by the publishers, who insisted that the book "could stand on its own." Sometimes we writers have no choice, especially when we understand the importance of author's notes.

In regard to historical fiction, as one who incorporates a certain amount of actual history into my books (i.e, The Secret of Gumbo Grove, Thank You, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! and Front Porch Stories at the One-Room School), I think that it's important that children know which books are "fiction" and which aren't.
