I have to say that reading has always been a release for me. My parents had read some of the books that I read, but I never wanted to *have* to discuss the books with them. I can only remember actually discussing a couple of books with them. They did not read them for the same reasons that I did and did not have the same interpretation of them.
In a problem household (I would now be termed "at risk" if I were still a child), I used reading as a way to get away from everything. To have to discuss something like -A Wrinkle In Time- or my Trixie Belden books with my parents would have been awful for me. That would have taken away my private fantasies. Not all children feel this way because of a problem at home, but some may resent the pressure. Reading should be done for pleasure, too. It is great for learning, but maybe the child should start the discussion sometimes.
