I read with interest the discussion of Rapunzel and remember a quote by the German poet, Rainer Maria Rilke: "Works of art are of an infinite loneliness with none to be so little reached as with criticism. Only love can grasp, hold, and truly understand them." As a teacher of teachers, I remind my students that they ought to make children lovers of literature and, as in the case of Rapunzel, art. Children become hardened, tax-paying beetles soon enough.
