In response to Ellen and Nina, about parents' reading (or not reading) the books they give their children: Might I be a tiny bit subversive, and suggest that for some children, reading is a place for them where their parents don't go? That reading is a refuge, a place to think thoughts and dream wishes that maybe, the child doesn't want to discuss with a parent? GraceAnne
