Thanks, Carrie, for getting us off to a good start in our discussion of
"Out of the Dust." I, too, have heard many people say that they can actually feel the grit and dust while reading the book. Hesse makes us continually aware of it, with her frequent references to the impact it has on every- day life -- having to wash the dishes before AND after meals, for instance. It's almost as if the dust itself is a character!
