I shared this book with six first grade classes, each one, even the lateafternoon, often itchy ones, were held in rapt attention. Of course they don't consciously understand all the levels of meaning Linnea and others so eloquently shared, BUT they DO recognize quality art and beautiful language, as well as a gripping story.
And it was a first grader who noticed some of the repeating flower imagery, after I had pointed out the flower in the tower and necklace. Maybe they haven't seen fine Rennaissance art, but when they do, perhaps there will be a greater appreciation. I also firmly believe that picture books are appropriate at all ages.
