Replying to Messages

All of us are no doubt struggling to keep up with ever-changing technology of which the rules always seem to be changing, so even when we sometimes intend for a message to go only to one person, it ends up being posted to a list as a whole. I also know that every e-mail server works a bit differently, but here is a suggestion for making sure your message goes only to the person to whom you want it to go: Do not use any "Reply to Sender" option your e-mail may have when responding to a message from a listserve that you want to send only to the individual who posted the message. Instead, generate messages to individuals as new messages and type in their address "from scratch" so to speak. If you do want to include a previous message in your message to an individual by using the
"Reply to sender" option go into the TO: box and delete the address, then re-type the person's address in so you are certain that is the only address appearing in the TO: line of a message.

I mention this because in experimenting with our e-mail system, I've noticed that if I use the Reply to Sender message on CCBC-Net, the listserve's general address comes up in the TO box as well as the individual's address, which means any message I wanted to send would go to the list as a whole.
