Thanks, Brenda, for sharing some of Karen Hesse's careful research for Out of the Dust. Without showy flaunting of period details, the sense of time and place imbues the spare, poetic language. Every facet of the story just _feels_ right, without worries about whether that car would have been driven or that clothing worn there and then. Even the cover photo became for me an icon, as though the story took me into that real girl's world. When the reader can trust an author so implicitly to construct and maintain a real, if not safe, world, even the pain we find there has meaning, and in this novel, redemption.
