Here's what's happening in the actual and the virtual CCBC during the next few weeks:
1) I hope you're already familiar with the fine book Sweet Words So Brave: The Story of African American Literature co-authored by James Michael Brodie and illustrated by Jerry Butler (1996, Zino Press). (SEE: CCBC Choices 1996). The Friends of the CCBC are co-sponsoring a joint presentation by Mr. Brodie and Mr. Butler on Monday, February 16 _at_ 7:00 p.m. in 4207 Helen C. White Hall, Corner of N. Park and Observatory Drive. Books will be sold at a special event price (probably minus 40%, according to the Friends' policy for Friends' events). Autographing will take place after the speeches. All are welcome, and the event is free and open to the public. 2) Monthly discussions of new books are scheduled for the following Fridays between 3:30-5:30pm: March 6, April 3, May 1, June 5, July 10 and August 7. The March book discussion list will be posted on the CCBC website in a couple of days. Discussion books can be borrowed on an overnight basis from the CCBC. These discussions are not programs to observe; all are expected to participate by having read or seen at least one or more books in advance. The first hour involved discussion of five highly visual books while the second features longer narrative works for children and young adults. It's OK to participate in one of the two hours or to be there for both hours. This is a regular opportunity to exchange ideas with CCBC staff, university students and faculty, teachers, librarians, writers, artists, etc., about new books. No registration required. No charge. 3) The annual CCBC Americas Awards Discussion will be held on Wed., March 4, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the CCBC. This is an outstanding opportunity to discuss 12 compelling works of Latino literature published during 1997 for children and young adults. This discussion is co-sponsored with the Madison Metropolitan School District, and there are already more than two dozen teachers registered to participate who are already using the books on the discussion list with their students as possible. Two members of the Americas Awards jury will be with us that evening, too. Get the list from the CCBC website, and get the books from the CCBC. You must register in advance. No charge. 4) The CCBC Choices of 1997 will be celebrated and discussed on CCBC Choices Publication Day: Saturday, March 7, in the CCBC. A selection of
"Choices" books for older readers will be presented by Megan Schliesman, Kathleen Horning and Ginny Moore Kruse _at_ 10:00 a.m., and some of the
"Choices" books for younger readers will be featured at 1:30 p.m. This event is free but it's open only to Friends of the CCBC members. You may join at the door. No registration. 5) Saturday, March 7: 7:30:00am Friends of the CCBC Used Booksale. 4th Floor, Helen C. White Hall. Open to Friends of the CCBC during the first hour. Great prices: 75 cents for all paperbacks and $3.00 for all hardcover books. You may join the Friends of the CCBC at the door in order to take advantage of the first hour of shopping. 6) Saturday, March 7: 11:45 a.m. Friends of the CCBC buffet luncheon, annual membership meeting and announcement of the winner of first annual Charlotte Zolotow Award for outstanding picture book text. Advance reservations must be made for the luncheon but Friends members do not need to register in order to attend the Friends annual meeting. For details, watch the CCBC website in a couple of days... 7) CCBC Distance Learning Opportunities led by Megan Schliesman, Kathleen Horning and Ginny Moore Kruse: a) February 12: Award-winning and outstanding books for pre-schoolers, a teleconference _at_ 4:30-6:20 p.m. For registration information contact Linda Mundt (LEmundt at facstaff.wisc.edu). b) February 19 & 26: Award-winning and outstanding books for children and young adults, a teleconference _at_ 5:00-6:20 p.m., featuring live comments by Caldecott Chairperson John Stewig and Notable Children's Books Committee member Sue Knorr. For registration information contact Linda Mundt (LEmundt at facstaff.wisc.edu). 8) We've been busy completing the writing for CCBC Choices, and we haven't kept the CCBC website quite as up to date as usual, but even so
- please check for the Book of the Week and current links as well as complete information as cited above (www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/). 9) CCBC-NET Discussions: Feb. 2 - 15: Newbery Award winner and honor books; Feb. 16 - March 1: Coretta Scott King Award and Honor Books; March 2 - 15: Batchelder Award book and honor books will include a discussion by the U.S. editor of The Robber and Me: Marc Aronson (Henry Holt Books) and other translated books; March 16 - 29: Pura Belpre Award winners and honor books; March 30 - April 12: Books by Russell Freedman, 1998 winner of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award; April 13 - end of April: Celebrate National Poetry Month by discussing poetry for children and young adults.
- We especially invite editors with special information about each of these books to contribute background comments, members of any of the above committees to speak for themselves out of their close acquaintance with many of these books, ditto any members of any of the ALA/ALSC or ALA/YALSA book evaluation committees, ditto *each and every one of you* yes, everyone! Speak up, ask your questions, throw down any number of gauntlets, respond from your experience with children or teenagers. Keep going! Cheers, Ginny
