Regarding Ashley Bryan's ABC of African American Poetry- Though I may not personally agree with the meaning behind each of the poems, there is no doubt in my mind that this is a wonderful book. It is fun to hold, a joy to behold, and a book to share with everyone. The colors are rich; the paintings are alive an d breathing life energy. I have so much I could say but I will try to pick just a few things.
I truly appreciate the authors note in the Foreword. It was helpful for me to read it before I read the book, instead of after- many times a note from the author is at the back of the book but for this book the front is good.
The letter C-The painting of Sojourner Truth is particularly compelling to me.
H- This was the first poem in the book which made me want to run to the library and find more poems by Eloise Greenfield and then came M which did it again! So Margaret Walker here I come.
The illustrations for I and J are explosive. And so is Z. This book has so much strength for me in the illustrations, I could have enjoyed it as a wordless book. But the poems and fragments of poems are a great addition. At the end of the book you are giv en an abundance of information you might need to find the poems, but also what you need to go back and read the poems again with new understanding. Knowing which poem is complete in itself and which is taken from a longer work made a difference to me as I read the book the second time. I will be sharing parts of this alphabet with my Monday Night Stories families.
