I just finished _Wringer_, and after _Maniac Magee_ I found this book to be very disappointing. _Maniac Magee_from the first paragraph impelled the reader to go on. I felt a real empathy with most of the characters and they had good and bad sides to them. Palmer was a nice enough kid, but I guess the pigeons just didn't grab me!! The children Palmer played with were pretty one dimentional with the exception of Henry who was so minor and Dorothy who was alas--a girl.

I don't even think that this book and _Out of the dust_ are anywhere close to the same quality. We have here apples and I can't think of an insignificant fruit to compare here. Michele Missner
