I think everyone has their own interpretation of what the definition of
"distinguished" is- and we're always comparing apples and oranges! One of the problems with the Caldecott is that only ONE book is chosen for a gold medal- I think that different committees in any given year often come up with a similar
"short" list - it's just THE one that may differ. How do we even have the language to compare the spritely energy of OFFICER BUCKLE with the masterful artistry of RAPUNZEL? Looking back, how does Van Allsburg 's fantasy world compare with Trina Schart Hyman's? Some of the discussion can be objective- but there is always an individual, emotional, visceral reaction to any given book- therefore committee decisions are often unpredictable. I am very satisfied with Rapunzel. I am thrilled that Zelinsky finally has a gold - it is well deserved.
