Before I add to comments on CSK Illustrator books, I want to add to Ginny's earlier comments about Augusta Baker and the oral history project of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) of the American Library Association. The reason we are encouraging this discussion to take place on the ALSC listserv and not on CCBC-Net is that many subscribers to CCBC-Net are not librarians or are not members of the American Library Association or ALSC. By this very fact, talking about an ALSC initiative is "insider" talk for some of us, and unintentionally exludes others of us.
Now, back to the books! Shawn Brommer, Steven Engelfried, and Ginny Kruse have expressed great appreciation for The Hunterman and the Crocodile for both its illustration and its writing. Even though In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall won the CSK Illustrator Award, I want to add to my own previous comment about that book that I found the selection of poems included in this anthology outstanding. I appreciated being able to "hear" some voices/writers I was not familiar with, and the theme of African American fatherhood was expolored in such a rich and moving way
(in both the writing and the art. Judith Furash said some of the poems and art together made her think of valentines. Indeed, the whole book is a moving tribute in that way.
Has anyone taken a close look at Ashley Bryan's ABC of African American Poetry? Other than the order of the 26 letters, it's not a usual ABC book in any way. I find it intriging for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it invites so much exploration--to find the whole poems and read them (source notes provided!), to think about the connection between the art and the passage, to think about the rich legacy of literature...
