Although I have not read the article very carefully, Long refers to Joy Hakims 10 volume "A history of U.S.." The interesting thing about this series is, as I recall, Hakim gave the manuscript to students to edit and critique. Students who would be reading this series--probably 5th or 6th graders were given codes to indicate if the parts of the series were boring, unclear, etc. Her best and worst critics were her audience and this is probably how she "banished dullness" from this set.
