Wendy, the point you make about reading being pleasurable and being allowed to remain private if the child wishes is so important and sometimes, unfortunately, a point we forget as librarians (and parents). A friend of mine whose father was an alcoholic said the same thing about her reading as a child -- it was her private escape and allowed her to have dreams beyond her home. Thanks for making these; they are points we all need to remember as librarians -- how precious and personal reading can be for a child.
