My mother grew up in dustbowl Oklahoma, the oldest of six. Her family survived, barely, on the homestead, but lots of relatives moved to California. She left home as a young adult, moved to the East Coast, and got a job with the government. I asked her once why she left Oklahoma, and she said she didn't want to spend every day of her life worrying about whether it was ever going to rain. The grit in Ms. Hesse's book seems absolutely believable to me; it jives with everything my relatives have told me about that awful time.
