I was so glad to read such great comments about The Gardener. It was my favorite picture book of 1997. I'm having trouble reading it aloud without tearing up but I'll keep at it until I can. I think David Small's illustrations are inspired. The railroad station scene is my favorite and I too wondered which station it was. I think it's one of those books where the text and illustrations fit together just perfectly. Bravo! Small and Stewart!
