Wringer -Reply

Walter,

I read your comments on Child-Lit on boys facing aggressive kids at school and repeated them to a number of guys at my office, every one of whom had had similiar experiences when they were young and/or had kids who had been put through this kind of wringer, typically in 6th-7th grade. I asked my 11-year-old son if he thought Palmer was a wimp, and he said, "No, he was just, like, a vegetarian." What he apparently meant by that is that Palmer was just a gentle kid among aggressive kids. He then proceeded to tell me rather hair-raising stories of what had happened to some kids like that at his (white, suburban) elementary school. So I think that you're probably right; this probably is still part of guy culture. To which I have to respond--and I mean this with all sincerity--Yuck.
